El Nio Has Returned But It’s Quite A Weak One

Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say that the conditions in the tropical Pacific now qualify to be considered El Niño. The phenomenon refers to warmer waters around the central Pacific, which influence the weather conditions of many countries along the ocean. The NOAA announcement comes after atmospheric conditions shifted. For the region to be experiencing El Niño, three things need to happen: the surface of the ocean needs to be more than 0.5°C above the long-term average, this temperature needs to hold up for several seasons, and finally, the Walker atmospheric circulation needs to diminish. This means more rains need to happen over the central Pacific than in South-East Asia. In the past month, researchers saw these changes …

KFC demoted an employee for wanting to pump at work. She just won a $1.5 million lawsuit against them.

Women have been re-entering the workforce after giving birth for decades now. You would think that employers would know how to treat new moms back on the job, but apparently some people still have a lot of learning to do. When Autumn Lampkins was hired to be an assistant manager at a Delaware Kentucky Fried Chicken just months after giving birth, she was told her new job wouldn’t interfere with her need to pump breastmilk. Instead, it did nothing but interfere. Lampkins claimed the KFC outlet gave her a hard time for wanting (and let’s face it, needing) to pump breast milk during her working hours. Lampkins filed a lawsuit against her former employer, stating she was demoted over it. …

This simple ‘test’ can help identify potentially abusive partners early in a relationship.

Most abusers don’t start their relationships by hitting their partners. That’s why early warning signs are vital to recognize. I know two women who recently left abusive partners. Both men seemed sweet and likable—even gentle—each time I saw them. Both had some lovely qualities as people and even as partners. And both turned out to be controlling, increasingly abusive partners behind closed doors. The thing about domestic violence is that most people don’t enter into relationships with someone who abuses them from the get go. It’s often like the analogy of the frog in boiling water. If you place a frog into a pot of boiling water, it’ll jump right out. But if you put it in a cool pot …
