UN: 25 Percent Of Premature Deaths Are Caused By Environmental Degradation

Environmental degradation is responsible for one in four premature deaths, the United Nations’ (UN) latest Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report reveals. That equates to approximately 9 million deaths in 2015 alone.  The report, unveiled at the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi on Wednesday, has been six years in the making and has involved the work of 250 scientists from 70 countries to gauge how environmental factors affect more than 100 diseases. It found that 1.4 million people die annually simply due to lack of access to clean water. This is because dirty water often carries pathogens that can cause easily preventable diseases – diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, for example. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are as many as 844 million people worldwide who …

Why grounding 737 MAX jets is a big deal for Boeing

Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick keeps Juve’s Champions League dream alive

(CNN)Cristiano Ronaldo was under no illusions when he signed for Juventus last July. To help it do things that it had never done before. This result is a great push for the future, we’re strong and we showed it.” Atletico must be sick of the sight of Ronaldo pushing for the future — he’s now scored a remarkable 25 goals in 33 games against the Spanish side. 12 Vintage Photos From The 1900s Prove That Mark Twain Was The Crazy Cat Lady Type Of Man

Like many kids, I marveled at the boyhood adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn as I enthusiastically read these classic American novels. I remember being shocked at the brutal nature of the times; the violence, alcoholism and racism that put my comfortable life into sharp perspective. But still, these books sparked a curiosity and wanderlust in me that I’m forever thankful to Mr.Twain for. Twain’s real name was Samuel Clemens, and his life was just as colorful and chaotic as the lives of his most famous characters. Born shortly after the appearance of Halley’s Comet, he predicted that he would “go out with it” as well. He promptly died the day after the comet returned. He has been praised …

Theories That Death Metal Desensitizes Fans To Violence Are All Wrong, Study Suggests

To say that death metal has a bit of a grisly reputation is an understatement. Its notoriety as a force for terror and disorder is not helped by song lyrics expounding torture, rape, murder, and necrophilia and tales of violence, human sacrifice, and ritualistic church burnings. (The latter, in fairness, being more of a Norwegian black metal kinda thing.)  But, if science is to be believed, we have this much-maligned genre all wrong. Despite the extremely graphic lyrics, the music does not inspire or desensitize its listeners to violence. Indeed, researchers at Macquarie University’s music lab involved in a decades-long investigation into the emotional effects of music have found it can provoke feelings of joy and empowerment in listeners.  “Many people enjoy …

GOP senators appear ready to block Trump border declaration

Since the Democratic-controlled House approved the measure last month, the Senate vote would force Trump to use a veto to protect his presidential campaign’s “Build the Wall” mantra over objections from his own party. “It was called turn out the lights, the party’s over,” said Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., recalling a favorite refrain of “Monday Night Football” announcers when a game was out of reach. “Well, that’s appropriate right now.” Senate passage of the resolution was all but ordained Wednesday after the collapse of efforts by the White House and GOP senators to reach compromise on separate legislation by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, limiting presidents’ powers to declare emergencies in the future. Republican lawmakers had hoped a deal on that …
