Web watchdog warns over knee-jerk rules

What will the White Paper say? The White Paper will detail new rules that the government wants introduced for social networks and web giants if they want to operate in the UK, or target services at British citizens. Mr Wright told the BBC that the White Paper would lay out a “scheme” and “how it can be paid for”. There has been speculation that the government is going to announce an internet regulator, similar to the one for TV and telecoms, Ofcom. “The period of time that we’ve been through, where we simply urged social media companies to do better and left them to regulate themselves, is a period that is now coming to an end,” Mr Wright said. The …

This man devised a formula for finding love, and followed it

This is someone you’re going to see virtually every day for the rest of your life; if you have kids, you’ll almost certainly have them with this person; you’ll share a bed, holidays, money, a home – pretty much everything, in fact. Wouldn’t it make sense to take a more rational approach? The statistics certainly suggest lots of us are getting it wrong: 42% of marriages in England and Wales are thought to end in divorce. In the US, the estimated figure is even higher: about half all married couples divorce. That’s why Ed Conard decided he needed to “optimise” his search for a spouse when he wanted to get married 20 years ago. Mr Conard is an uber-capitalist. He …

UK inflation falls to two-year low

Why are prices falling? Mike Hardie, ONS head of inflation, said: “The fall in inflation is due mainly to cheaper gas, electricity and petrol, partly offset by rising ferry ticket prices and air fares falling more slowly than this time last year.” Ofgem’s energy price cap, which came into effect from 1 January 2019, helped drive down inflation, the ONS said. However, that cap is being raised and this is likely to feed into future CPI figures. Price of flats fell in England last year The ONS said that petrol prices were also down by 2.1% per litre between December 2018 and January 2019 due to falling crude oil prices. Hotel and restaurant prices were also lower while prices of …
