George and Kellyanne Conway’s political spat is comedic gold

(CNN)Kellyanne Conway is now publicly disparaging her husband George for his attacks on her boss, the President of the United States. Conway, who called her husband out for being unsupportive, also framed her relationship as “the unusual situation of a man getting power through his wife.” Her withering remarks call to mind the scene where King Lear famously utters: “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child” — though in this case it’s a spouse being slagged off for being thankless (or “jealous”). It’s not quite “Love’s Labour’s Lost;” and nobody’s going anywhere near suggesting it’s about the “Taming” of anybody. But neither does it seem to be “Much Ado About Nothing.” Sign up for …

Elizabeth Warren nailed it

(CNN)Big ideas? Check. Complex solutions broken down into digestible sound bites? Check. Heart-tugging anecdotes? Check. Authenticity? In spades. Warren’s performance wasn’t perfect. She answered a question about affordable higher education and the rich being able to buy their way into nearly everything by talking about the influence of money in Washington, instead of addressing the college admissions scam in greater depth. Brexit has radicalized the UK’s political class

(CNN)Remember the days when British politics was like its weather and its food? Safely predictable, frequently disappointing, seldom extreme? Those days of moderation are behind us. The fish and chips haven’t changed, but everything else has. Stable, dependable Britain has become dangerously unhinged. So, what about that no-deal scenario? If, three years ago, you had predicted that the Prime Minister would be threatening an entirely voluntary policy that crashed the economy and necessitated food and medicine shortages, most sensible people would have laughed in your face. But this really is happening. The government has issued exhaustive guidelines, itemizing how our lives will change, and the health secretary has refused to guarantee that people will not die. If there is no …

Why Virginia’s chaos has deep roots

(CNN)Today, the cascading upheavals stemming from racist incidents by the state’s top leaders have many Virginians and others saying that the state is in disarray. Two of the state’s top three officials, Gov. Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring, have admitted to dressing in blackface, while the third, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, faces allegations (which he denies) of sexual assault. With each man facing backlash that could threaten their viability to hold office, many feel that the bottom has dropped out of the state. Northam, caught in the throes of a racist scandal involving blackface, recently claimed that he would not resign his position for fear that would be branded a “racist for life.” Sign up for our new …
